Peru’s Tourism Ministry to have 217-million-sol budget in 2009

In a meeting with Peru’s Congressional Budget Commission, Mercedes Aráoz, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) announced that the organization had been granted 217.3 million soles for 2009.

Aráoz explained that 92 million soles would be given to Peru’s tourism and exportation promotion agency, PromPeru and that MINCETUR would invest 124 million.

It was reported that there had been a 14-million-sol increase in MINCETUR’s budget when compared to the ministry’s budget in 2008 (203 million soles).

The head of MINCETUR assured that these funds would be invested in promoting and diversifying Peruvian exports.

“We want to complete the various trade agreements being negotiated, continue pushing negotiations with the United Kingdom, launch a free trade deal with Japan and continue participating in the Doha round and APEC meetings,” said Aráoz .

She added that MINCETUR was also working on including foreign trade courses in Peruvian high schools in regions such as Amazonas, Puno, Huancavelica, Ucayali, Tumbes, Apurímac, Pasco and Madre de Dios.

Over 35000 tourists to visit Peru northern regions on National Holidays

Lima, Jul. 13 (ANDINA).- During the four day-long national holidays, some 37 thousand local and foreign tourists will visit the northern regions of La Libertad, Piura and Tumbes, which are famous for its amazing beaches and archaeological monuments, local authorities said today.Bernardo Alva, manager of Foreign Trade, Tourism and Handicrafts of La Libertad, mentioned that this region expects to receive nearly 23 thousand tourists during the long weekend.

“We have great expectation because we are a tourist destination that is located near Lima, our main source market, and because we have good transportation companies, a pleasant climate and friendly people”, he added.

“Since a few months ago, in a joint work with PromPeru and tour operators, we have been promoting tourism during long weekends and holidays, we have printed postcards, placed advertisements in newspapers and offered attractive tourist packages”, he added.

Alva also mentioned that La Libertad has enough hotels to accommodate a large number of people, as he noted that hotel rates do not increase during these days.
